The 10 hectare of vines of the estate, located on the outskirts of the small village of Husseren les Châteaux are 25 to 45 years old.
Predominantly composed of limestone-clay, numerous parcels are situated inside the perimeter of the Eichberg and Pfersigberg Grand Crus, both of which are well sought out by wine and food connoisseurs.
Grand Cru Eichberg
Located south/south-east, at 340 meters of altitude, the Eichberg is naturally protected from precipitation by the Vosges Mountain, and benefits as a result from a dry and hot micro climate. The clay-limestone based soil is composed of limestone conglomerates and marls-oligocene with boulders remaining from the Tertiary age, which can be found among the sandstone pebbles, sometimes resulting in a more siliceous (quartz) soil, quartzite pebbles, white coated marl or sandy clay. The soil is characterized by good water retention. It is airy and rich in minerals. It produces powerful wines, with excellent aromatic complexity, well bodied, and greatly balanced by a refreshing acidity.
Grand Cru Pfersigberg
The hills of this vineyard are exposed east/south, nestled behind the Alsatian mountains, benefiting from maximal sun exposure. The Pfersigberg is composed of marl-limestone soil, with various white/yellowish pebbles of the Jurassic era, and grey and hard muschelkalk. Fossils can easily be found in the soil, and in between which, can sometimes be found layers of sandstone (yellow sandstone from Rouffach). Rich in limestone easy to assimilate by the plants, the clay helps to fix micronutrient fertilizers. This forces the roots to dive deeper into the soil in order to find the nutrients they need. The water retention is average, which causes for the grapes to reach maturity early. This terroir produces wines of great finesse, powerful, well structured, fat, spicy, and with a fantastic aging potential.
Terroir from Husseren Les Châteaux and Surroundings
These parcels located on the outskirts of the Grand Cru terroirs are mostly used to produce our Trois Châteaux wines. Exposed east/south-east, the soil is rich in loess and silt, sandy and limestone, weak in clay, porous, permeable, and great with good water retention. These parcels provide mineral expression, and a refreshing acidity.
